Northwood Glass Company / Wheeling, West Virginia

Harry Northwood, son of English glassmaker John Northwood, is responsible for producing some of the most desirable carnival glass of today.  A veteran of glassmaking industry, Harry was associated with the Hobbs, Brockunier & Co, La Belle Glassworks, and his own plants and Martins Ferry, Ohio, Ellwood City, PA, Indiana, PA, and finally Wheeling, WV, where he began producing carnival glass, circa 1908.

For the next two decades, the Wheeling plant output was prolific, in carnival glass, custard glass and various crystal and pattern lines.  Northwood Grape and Cable is probably one of the most recognized and easily found patterns today. A tumbler collector will find a wide variety of colors and patterns that can be assembled in Northwood Glass alone.  Many of them will be signed with an "N" in a circle trademark.
Harry Northwood died in 1919. The factory continued operations until 1923, and was never reopened.

Some of the Northwood/Dugan moulds from Indiana, PA have been acquired by LG Wright Company, and starting in the 1960's, reproduction carnival has been made. More of the recent reproductions have been made by Mosser, and are currently being produced in Taiwan.  Many of the reproduction items bear a trademark very similiar to the old Northwood mark, and can be very confusing to the new collector.  To date, only the Singing Birds, Grape & Cable and Cherry & Cable have been reproduced in the tumbler shape. But as the popularity of carnival glass continues, so will undoubtfully, the reproductions.
